Students in our third grade built mobiles in Science class.  This project involved the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).  Each of our Third Graders built a mobile in Science class. They experimented with balanced forces as they assembled their individual mobile structures. During Art class they were able to design and build creatures out of recycled materials. Some students wanted their creatures to become part of an outdoor art installation to hang from the trellis outside their classroom. Working together, the individual creatures became part of a larger mobile structure you can now see hanging outside their classroom. Although it has fallen down and needed to be rebuilt, this provided a perfect opportunity for the young engineers to analyze the pieces and find the cause of the failure. The students have learned about how scientists, engineers and artists often refine their plans to meet the needs of the situation. They have used problem solving, PVC piping, duct tape, and a tube of strong glue to reassemble their mobile which is proudly displayed for all to see.  If you would like to view the wonderful student creatures that are displayed indoors, please take the stairs to the third floor where they are waiting to greet on the landing at the top of the stairs.
